Breathing is the life force that rejuvenates every cell in your body, every activity of your awareness, and every action that you make. Yoga masters knew from ancient times that the breath is the most essential part of human life because it connects us to the life force in all matter. They called this energy by several names, such as prana, chi, ki, or qi.
The breath is also what unites us as living beings. The practice of conscious breathing costs nothing and is universal—there is no dogma associated with it, and no religion or government regulating its use! Breathing can be done automatically without thinking about it, but it can also be monitored or controlled consciously in order to achieve physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual benefits.
The lungs are sponge-like tissues inside the bones of the rib cage. Inhaling oxygen increases energy as the lungs absorb oxygen from the air and send it to the blood for transport throughout the body. Exhaling expels byproducts of metabolism as the lungs receive carbon dioxide from the blood and send it out of the body. According to Dr. Tom Goode in his book, Breathe and Grow Rich, “Most people in Western society are shallow breathers, breathing in the upper one-third to one-fourth of their lungs. We call this thoracic, or chest breathing. This shallow breathing promotes stress and drains the energy needed for optimal health and vitality.”
Purification practices, such as deep breathing, clear our chakras and auric bodies while energizing the physical body and removing toxins from its cells. Breathing is not only a life-giving process; it also has a way of exposing negative and self-destructive patterns. It may bring up issues to be healed, but remember that your focus is on integration. Don’t allow yourself to obsess over whatever is stirred up.
Rapid or slow cycles, shallow or deep, nose or mouth, holding the breath or moving air without pausing—there seems to be no limit to the number of methods that can be used for conscious breathing. Each method has different effects and purposes. I will briefly outline those that I am most familiar with. There are many, many other effective techniques; so, I encourage you to find one that resonates with you and diligently use it.
